Book Review: Greenlights
Updated: Jan 26, 2021
Greenlights by Matthew McConaghey was my first read of 2021, and it did not disappoint. I love memoirs written by celebrities, and I want the audiobook version of these. I enjoy listening to the author read the story because it's as if a friend is sharing his life over a cup of coffee. The audiobook version of this book was amazing! Matthew had me smiling through most of his story and laughing with him at times. I didn't know he was an exchange student to Australia as a teen, and his host family were interesting people. Side note: he decided to become a vegetarian at this time and thought that meant eating lettuce with ketchup...gross!
The title Greenlights is a nod to events in his life where he felt he had the "green light" to pursue or proceed. I thought this was an interesting way of looking at life and finding those "green lights" or permissions to do what you want whether that is chasing a dream, taking a job, making a move, etc. Matthew also gives bumper stickers for life which are humorous and some you may have heard before. He ties all these in together well with his story.
I would have liked to have heard more stories relating to his movie and co-star experiences. Those type of stories are always fun. For example, share a funny story that happened on set. That really is the only thing that I would have liked to see. Oh, and maybe make it a longer book.
Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable book. It is a quick read and a well put together memoir. I highly recommend it.
